„Ich male, also bin ich“

Formvollendet- Der gebürtige Liechtensteiner Künstler und Autor Patrick Kaufmann gewährt Eintritt in sein Atelier. Inmitten seiner Bilder erfahren wir mehr über sein Denken und Wirken.
Er sucht nicht, er lässt sich von den Farben und Formen finden. Es sind Farben und Formen, die aus seinem Inneren entspringen. Patrick Kaufmann ist ein sensitiver Künstler, der mit seinen feinen Antennen in andere Dimensionen taucht, die für das menschliche Auge unsichtbar sind. Seine Bilder sind Zeugen der universellen Energie, die Welten miteinander verbinden und einander bedingen: „Wenn ich male, bin ich vollkommen bei mir, in meiner Herzfrequenz. Ich male, ich bin; Körper und Seele sind im Einklang“, erklärt der Liechtensteiner Künstler in wenigen Sätzen. Seine Bilder im Atelier laden zum Eintauchen ein, während die Zeit still zu stehen scheint. Es sind abstrakte, zeitlose Ölbilder, die Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft in einem harmonischen Farbenfluss reflektieren und dem Betrachter die Interpretation überlassen.
Die Natur als Lehrmeister
Das Fliessende, Bewegende, sich stets Wandelnde findet sich in jedem seiner Bilder wieder: „Alles schwingt und ist in Bewegung. Stillstand gibt es nicht. Denn alles ist miteinander verbunden“, verdeutlicht der Künstler anhand eines Baumstammes, an welchem er sich mit der Stirn anlehnt. Die Natur spielt einen wichtigen Stellenwert in seinem Leben: „Das tat ich schon als Kind, mit meinem Grossvater, der mich lehrte, den Wald mit anderen Augen zu sehen, vor allem aber, zu spüren. Wenn ich heute durch den Wald schreite, tue ich dies in vollem Bewusstsein, indem ich mich atmend mit der Natur verbinde.“ Die Natur habe ihn gelehrt, dass es einen grossen Unterschied zwischen Sehen und Wahrnehmen gibt: „Was ich damit sagen möchte ist, dass wahrnehmend sehen durchaus lernbar ist und uns Menschen im Alltag wachsamer werden lässt.“
Als Künstler übertretet Kaufmann stets bewusst persönliche Grenzen, ohne zu verletzen und stets auf der ästhetischen Ebene. Es sind auch Grenzen des Unwissens, dank derer Überschreitung sich neue Erfahrungen und Einsichten auftun, welche seine Perspektive erweitern und ihn, seiner persönlichen Wahrheit, seinem Spirit näherbringen: „Für mich ist die gelebte Spiritualität mein Ausdruck als Künstler. Das ist die Umsetzung von praktischer Philosophie, mein Leben so zu leben, wie ich es für richtig erachte. Ich gehe meinen Weg, meinen eigenen. Den Weg als geistiges Wesen, meinen Weg als Künstler.“
Zwischen Wahn und Sinn
Patrick Kaufmann gehört nicht zu denjenigen Künstlern und Autoren, die privilegiert aufgewachsen sind. Er hat sich vieles selber, von Klein auf hart erarbeitet und auch sein Philosophie- Kunst- und Architekturstudium teilweise selbst finanziert. In der Studienzeit in Basel wurde er durch Stipendien unterstützt. Seine Willenskraft und Authentizität sickern durch jedes seiner Werke hindurch, die allesamt seine Leidenschaft für die Malerei bekunden. Die Leidenschaft ist seine Antriebskraft, die ihn immer wieder mehrere Bilder gleichzeitig malen lässt: „Über mehrere Wochen, Monate hindurch, arbeite ich dann im Atelier an Bildserien; manchmal ist es wie im Wahn. Neue Ideen entstehen und ich bin nicht zu stoppen; Ich vergesse sogar Nahrung zu mir zu nehmen. Im Gegenzug schenkt mir das Bild viel Kraft.“ Allein dieses Geständnis beweist, dass Kunst sein Lebenselixier ist, wie der Atem, der ihn am Leben erhält. Kaufmann ist keine Ausnahme. Vielen grossen Künstlern der Vergangenheit wie beispielsweise Pablo Picasso oder Vincent van Gogh ist es ähnlich ergangen. In diesem Kontext lässt sich der Begriff Wahn mit Ekstase gleichsetzen. Denn es ist des Meisters Schicksal, die Grenzen zu transzendieren und über sich selbst hinauszuwachsen, bis der Moment der Stille wieder einkehrt: „Daraus kann auch eine Krise entstehen; doch Krisen sind auch dazu da, um wieder aus ihnen rauszuwachsen“, schlussfolgert Kaufmann aus Erfahrung. Und dann? „Entsteht Neues und es beginnt wieder von vorn. So geht es weiter. Das Leben, meine Kunst sind ein wachsendes Gefäss, ein in sich ausdehnender Raum, der keinen Stillstand kennt.“
“I paint, therefore I am”

In perfect shape – Liechtenstein-born artist and author Patrick Kaufmann invites us into his studio. Gazing at the pictures all around us, we learn more about the way he thinks and works.
Rather than looking for colours and shapes, the man lets colours and shapes find him. For colours and shapes arise from his inner being. Patrick Kaufmann is a sensitive artist. He uses his finely tuned antennae to delve into dimensions otherwise invisible to the human eye. His pictures testify to a universal energy; they connect and define mutually interdependent worlds: “When I paint, I’m totally at one with myself. I’m in time with the beats of my heart. The act of painting makes me who I am; my body and soul are in complete harmony,” says the Liechtenstein artist in a few, brief sentences. His paintings in the studio are an open invitation for viewers to enter and explore other worlds while time seems to stand still. His timeless, abstract oil paintings reflect the past, present and future in a harmonious flow of colours, the interpretation of which is left to the viewer.
Nature is his true teacher
Each of his paintings reflect what flows, moves and constantly changes: “Everything reverberates and is in motion. There is no such thing as a standstill, because everything’s interconnected.” To illustrate the point, the artist presents himself leaning with his forehead against a tree trunk. Nature plays an important role in his life: “I used to do that as a child with my grandfather. He taught me to see, and above all to feel the forest through different eyes. When I walk through the forest today, I do so in a state of complete awareness. The simple act of breathing connects me to nature.” Nature, he thinks, has taught him that there is a big difference between seeing and perceiving: “In saying that, what I mean is that it is quite easy to learn how to see things perceptively. By doing so, we human beings can develop a sharper vision for many things in everyday life.”
As an artist, Kaufmann constantly and deliberately transgresses personal boundaries, always on the aesthetic level, without causing slight or injury. By overcoming the limits of knowledge, and therefore of ignorance, Kaufmann is able to broaden his perspective. The new experiences and insights which emerge bring him closer to his personal truth and his spirit: “For me, my immediate experience of spirituality is how I express myself as an artist. In other words, I try to implement a practical philosophy and live my life in a way I think is right. So I go my way, my own way, both as a spiritual human being and as an artist.”
Between madness and meaning
Patrick Kaufmann is not one of those artists and writers who grew up in privileged circumstances. Right from his childhood days, he has worked hard to get to where he is now. In this regard he partially funded the costs of his studies of philosophy, art and architecture entirely by himself. During his period of studying in Basel, he was also supported by scholarships. His willpower and authenticity seep through each of his works, all of which demonstrate his passion for painting. Passion is his driving force, which repeatedly allows him to paint several pictures at the same time: “Over a period of several weeks and months, I then work in my studio on an entire series of pictures, sometimes like a man possessed. New ideas occur to me; I’m unable to stop; sometimes I even forget to eat. In return, the pictures I create give me enormous energy.” This confession alone proves that art is his elixir of life, just like the breath that keeps him alive. Kaufmann is no exception. Many great artists in the past, such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, went through similar experiences. In this context, the term madness can be equated with ecstasy. Because the destiny of a master is to transcend borders – to rise above himself until the moment arrives when silence returns: “Of course, crises can arise; but crises are also there for us to grow out of them,” Kaufmann concludes from experience. And what happens then? ”Well, that’s when new things originate and you start again from the beginning. And that’s how it goes. My life and my art are a vessel which grows, a space which expands – and which is never still.”
